The confidence classroom

creating classrooms where students feel seen, safe, connected, and capable

Students today are growing up in a culture of constant comparison through social media, academics, sports, appearance, peer pressure, and family expectations. Many students who seem disengaged, perfectionistic, or unmotivated are actually struggling with self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy.

In this uplifting and practical presentation, Kathie Gwilliam helps educators recognize comparison-driven behaviors in students and identify the language and environments that unintentionally reinforce them. She then equips them with two practical, connected frameworks for building healthier classroom cultures:

SOAR — for helping students navigate a comparison in the moment: State the comparison, Observe the results, Acknowledge why it's unfair, Replace the thought or action.

That final step, replacing the thought or action, is where the AIR principles come in — giving students concrete ways to shift from comparison toward Appreciation for others, Inspiration to try new things, and Recognition of personal strengths.

Through powerful storytelling and actionable strategies, educators leave equipped to help students feel seen, safe, connected, and capable of growth.
